Brakur_5_CluesThere comes a point in your life when you start think my kitchen needs something more. Maybe the hardware is looking warn or you backsplash is looking a little dated.  Or your cabinets are stuffed to the rafters and every time you open one you have to go digging for what you need.  We all know the kitchen is the heart of most homes and some of us have just lost that loving feeling and dread walking in there.

So how do you know when your kitchen needs a major overhaul and not just a few minor updates or a good de-cluttering? We wanted to share 5 clues that will let you know it is time to remodel the kitchen.

Clue #1

Your home was built in the dark ages.  No seriously, if you have been living in your home for more than 20-30 years and you still have the original kitchen it might be time to consider a new kitchen remodel. Think of how much technology has changed. The kitchen has changed just as much. The kitchen isn’t just a place to cook and eat anymore. It is a part of our lifestyle and family.  Many households now use it for entertaining, paying bills, and a place to do homework and much more. There is so much more your kitchen can do for you to help in the function and organization of your household.

Clue # 2

You can’t seem to find anything in your kitchen. For those of us who are not OCD the kitchen can be a constant disaster area. There are many unique storage ideas for the kitchen that can help you function better and bring some much-needed sanity to your life. In today’s world our time is valuable and we need to have help being organized so we have time to do those important things. A kitchen remodel is one of the most impactful things you can do to make your home life work better.

Clue #3

You have experienced a lifestyle change. Depending on what stage in life you are in your kitchen may not be meeting your needs. There are so many new products that have come out, from appliances that do the cooking for you to lower maintenance countertops and improved flooring. Maybe you need that microwave drawer or refrigerated snack drawer for your little ones. Or you are not as young as you used to be or you have an elderly parent living with you. There are many things you can include in your kitchen remodel that will not only increase safety, but also meet the needs of the entire household. You may want to think about designing a kitchen that will age with you.

Clue #4

Your stain is fading and the cabinets no longer match. After many years of cleaning and sun exposure your cabinets will start to change color and look like they don’t match anymore. Or you may see splotches where the stain is wearing off. If you use your kitchen for entertaining you are familiar with the feeling of friends noticing the aging look. Many people wonder if they can just re-stain their cabinets. Most of the time the answer is that it’s not possible and it’s time to go for a new kitchen.

Clue #5

Your shelves are bowed and your cabinet doors are warped and won’t close. After years of abuse and overloading shelves there are only so many repairs you can make. Depending on where you live cabinet doors will warp from the humidity. It’s difficult, if not impossible to match and get the right look to replace them. Stain colors change and wood ages. You may have had to replace the hinges a few times and are running out of places to put screws in to hold the cabinet door on. If you are going to go through the expense you might as well do it right.

So many times we scrimp and do these minor fixes that keep us happy for a little while. In the end we may spend more than if we had just done the kitchen remodel from the beginning. It seems to snowball. Once you change one thing in your kitchen then it makes something else more noticeable so you feel like you have to fix that as well.

If you can answer yes to any of these clues we suggest you call and talk to one of our kitchen professionals about designing a new kitchen for you.  At Brakur Custom Cabinetry we know how important your kitchen is to you and we can help you get the right kitchen and eliminate some of the chaos you may be feeling.
