Brakur_-_Common_MistakesIt doesn’t matter how comfortable the rest of the house is, people always tend to gravitate toward the kitchen. It could be kids working on a school project, friends hanging out and playing a game, or the aroma of those yummy chocolate chip cookies they can smell coming from the oven pulling them in.

Regardless of the reason, our lifestyles have changed and the kitchen has become an extension of our living space. Knowing how important the kitchen is, you will want to make sure that you design a kitchen that fits your style and can be a space that is everything to everyone. With a little planning you can avoid these common mistakes.

Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Have Room to Work - Countertops were meant to not only be decorative but functional. Plan for how you will use your countertops and place appliances near workspaces so things flow better. You may have heard of the work triangle. You will want to make a list of specific activities that will occur in the kitchen.
  2. Plan for Storage - There are many unique storage options that you can include in your kitchen remodel.  Think of appliances that you would like to keep hidden and take advantage of organization cabinets.
  3. Use Layered Lighting - Rooms typically need three types of lighting: Ambient (general overhead) accent, and task. Consider where you will need your electrician to put certain outlets. The lighting you choose for your kitchen can make your kitchen really stand out and make it a feature room.
  4. Choose Good Ventilation - You don’t want to smell last night’s dinner. Getting a good ventilation system can preserve your cabinets and improve the air quality of your home. Why not choose a decorative or stainless steel range hood that adds to the character and style of your kitchen.
  5. Pay Attention to Budget - The cost of a kitchen should not be more than 20 percent of the value of your home. A kitchen will always add value but you want to be able to recoup the cost and then some when you resell. You would not want to put a $50,000 kitchen in a home that only cost $100,000, unless you plan on staying there forever.
