It is not uncommon to walk in most kitchens today and see some sort of an island.  Kitchens are bigger and can more easily accommodate an island.  Today’s kitchen islands have purpose as well as style and function. 

When it comes to remodeling a kitchen, adding an island is usually at the top of the list. But is a kitchen island really what every kitchen needs?  In some kitchens a peninsula or U-shaped kitchen might actually be more practical and beneficial. A peninsula in some floor plans or layouts will actually give you more storage, can create extra seating and have many added benefits.

So how do you know when to choose an island over a peninsula?  First you will want to determine if there is enough space between the island and the rest of the cabinets in the kitchen.  You need at least 36 inches of space or it gets too crowded and can make a kitchen congested.  You want to be able to open drawers and cabinet doors without banging into the rest of the kitchen.  Second, you will want to consider the different work zones and needs of your household.  Lastly, you will want to consider the overall floor plan of your home.  Will your kitchen be open or closed?
