The Kitchen – Now the Brain of the Home Too

KB Brain of Home Fridge.pngYou’ve heard the kitchen called the “heart of the home”. That’s because it’s our gathering place. It’s the central point of our family get-togethers. It’s the hub of activity around a family.

Well, now the kitchen is adopting a new name. It’s becoming the brain of the home as well. The Internet has changed everything, and we’re now in the middle of a new wave of making our kitchens become the hub of everything in our home.

We may not be to the days of the “Jetsons” yet, where robots do everything and make our lives space-age. Even though that’s the case, new inventions are making their way to the kitchen that control all kinds of aspects of our lives, and not just cooking.

We highlight some of what’s coming (and already here!) below.

Voice Controlled Everything

Echo.pngThe commercials are everywhere. Alexa, the Amazon Echo’s name, is one of many rapidly growing voice controlled devices that can control more and more parts of your home. Lights, ceiling fans, thermostat, power, music, news, your calendar, to do lists, grocery list, sprinkler systems, security systems, appliances, and the list goes on and on. In addition, more and more skills and devices are added all the time.

Another popular device similar to the Amazon Echo is the Google Home. Even without these types of devices, appliances are made smarter and have voice control features built in that allow you to give them commands or find out info by just asking. This is a new way of life in the kitchen that will only continue to expand into wonderful new abilities.

Interactive Surfaces

Soon you’ll be able to interact with your cook top or other surfaces as if they were a computer screen that can show you recipes, your lists, news, all kinds of things right there while you’re cooking or preparing food. This will be a monumental shift in what you can do in the kitchen.

Scan to Cook

Bar codes are becoming more and more useful. Since they are on almost everything we buy, you can now scan them with an app and have the instructions to cook or prepare food automatically populated in your appliances. No more reading box instructions!

Notifications

So many apps, so little time! Now you can be notified on your phone when your Chicken Cacciatore is finished, when your laundry is done, if you left your oven on, if your power goes out, and a host of other events. Everything is beginning to go through the hub of the brain of your kitchen.

Smart Devices

There are tons of new smart devices now on the market.

  • You can have crock pots that you can control or check status on your phone.
  • There are containers that will keep track of what you have left in them, and notify you to buy more.
  • You can buy scales that tell you all about your nutrition from the food your using, give you relevant recipes, and track your eating habits for you.
  • Your kettle can warm water on demand from wherever you are by your phone, and notify you when the water is warm.
  • Your smart fork can keep track of your nutrition, eating speed, quantity of food consumed and more.
  • Your egg container can notify you that you’re getting low on eggs.
  • The list goes on and grows every day.

All these things are typically centered around the kitchen as the hub of all activity in the home. These are just the beginning as so many new technologies are on the cusp of being released and adopted into our homes.
