How is your kitchen backsplash knowledge? Do you know about the pro’s and con’s of all the different options? It’s one of the more difficult design decisions for many homeowners. Cabinets and countertops are the focus most times, and backsplashes take the back seat.

Here we cover the differences between glass mosaics and natural stone to help you understand what would be best for your kitchen.

Considering backsplash has similarities to considering cabinets and countertops. You’re looking at cost, maintenance, longevity, and resale impact on your home.

Since glass and stone are the frequently chosen backsplash, we list some of the main pro’s and con’s below.

Glass Mosaics

  • High-End Appeal – Glass can look expensive and luxurious. If don’t right you can make a big statement.
  • Trendy – Glass is popular today. Things change over time but there is a large demand which means there are many great style options to meet that demand.
  • Simple to Clean – The surface of glass is easy to wipe down. That is as long as your choice doesn’t have too many grooves and transitions.

Con’s

  • High Cost – Glass can be expensive and many times from $20 to $30 per square foot.
  • Style Longevity – Since color and patters are such a big part of glass mosaics, they can quickly go out of style since those things change more frequently.
  • “Me Too” Backsplash – There aren’t a bazillion options of different styles and colors. So you may have the exact same backsplash as 3 others in your neighborhood.

Natural Stone

  • Everybody Loves Stone – The appeal is almost universal, so it’s hard to not be safe with stone.
  • Unique in Every Home – Since stone always varies from other stone, you won’t have the exact same thing as another kitchen.
  • Inexpensive – You have many options as less than $10 per square foot with stone if you have a tighter budget.

Con’s

  • Maintenance – Stone, as with countertops, can require more maintenance than other materials.
  • Easier to Stain – Since things hit the backsplash, and stone is porous, the stains can absorb and stick.
  • Variation – It’s difficult to determine exactly how your backsplash will look when finished because of the variation in stone. The sample you look at could be quite different than they piece that gets delivered to your home.
