cabinet-knobOccasionally, throughout the life of your cabinets, you may find some of your more frequently used cabinet doors beginning to look the slightest bit crooked - and they may even feel a tad bit wobbly. To top it all off, some of the hardware may seem loose. Is it time to panic?

No, this doesn’t mean your installer did a poor job, or that your cabinets are lacking in quality by any means – this is common, and will happen from time to time.

Does this mean you have to call a repairman? In most cases, no. All it means is that you need to devote a few minutes to tightening things up. All you will generally need is a screwdriver, a pair of hands and a set of eyes.

Adjusting your hardware

Tightening your cabinet knobs and pulls is simple. Open the cabinet door and find the screws on the opposite side of the hardware. Keep your hand on the hardware and push it into place. Depending on how loose the hardware is, the screws on the inside of the door may pop out a bit. Use a screwdriver that corresponds with the head of the screw, and turn it clockwise until it is snug. Be careful not to continue turning once you feel resistance, as you can strip the screw and damage the hardware and the hole.

Adjusting your hinges

Not every hinge is created equally – in fact, there are many variations, which is why we have created a helpful guide to assist your hinge adjustments on three popular hinge styles found at Brakur – the Double Demountable Hinge, the European Hinge and the Hidden Hinge:

Don’t have these Brakur cabinet hinges? If your doors become loose and misaligned, you should be able to gently move the door back to its proper alignment and hold it in place while you re-tighten the screws. If the door is not loose, but simply misaligned, you may need to slightly loosen (not remove) the screws that secure the hinges to the door or the frame, depending on the adjustment needed. After loosening the appropriate screws slightly in the counterclockwise direction, you should then be able to adjust the placement and re-tighten by turning the screw clockwise until it is snug.
