The kitchen island is an excellent place to make form meet function and give your kitchen some new advantages. Here are five modern kitchen island ideas that are no brainers for your remodel.

**Integrate Appliances**

What better way to make use of the island than to add appliances? By placing a dishwasher, microwave, or wine cooler within the island you are adding creative storage spaces for these appliances. Appliances attached to an island also fall perfectly into the workflow of your kitchen you, so you never miss a beat. A common integration with the island is the kitchen sink. Putting the sink on the island gives you more outer counter space and gives your kitchen a clean and organized look.

**Speaking of Storage Space…**

The island is an excellent place to find extra storage space that you did not know you needed. Hollowing out one side of the island and adding pull-out storage cubbies or shelves are great applications of this concept. From storing cookbooks to utensils your island can become a versatile storage option for all manner of things. It is possible to even empty out space within the island to store chairs or extra tables for large parties.

**You can Never Have Too Much Seating**

A very common application of the island is the addition of barstool seating. The overhanging countertop gives room for chairs or stools to slide under them, perfectly fitting within the nook between the countertop and floor. Island seating is great for casual dining or even just lounging around in the kitchen.

**Hide Your Trash**

Rather than having a tacky looking trash can sitting in the middle of your kitchen, why not install a pull-out trash and recycling drawer into your island? This feature is great for cooking, especially when combined with an island with a kitchen sink. Preparation for cooking becomes as easy as washing your ingredients and sliding the scraps into the trash drawer below. This is a very popular design trend that many homeowners have taken advantage of.

**Turn Your Island into a Cart**

A mobile island is a newer design trend that has gained traction recently. This island on wheels gives you freedom to change your kitchen layout at any moment. It can rest in the center like a traditional island or be pushed off to the side as needed. This helps if you need to clear space in the kitchen or need a large surface serving meals.
