Once you finally have your new custom cabinets installed, you won’t have to do too much to keep them looking nice. But, to keep them in tip top shape, it is recommended that you do some minor cleaning and occasional adjustments. Do you know how to clean your cabinetry?
Before you pick up any old wood cleaner, proceed with caution. It is important to consult with your cabinet supplier if possible to find out what they recommend for keeping your specific line of cabinets maintained. Contrary to what many people believe, not all woods or cabinets are created equally. Your cabinetry finish will have a lot of say over the cleaning ritual you should perform – however, there are some tips that are generally safe for most types of cabinets.
General maintenance tips:
Every homeowner should make the small investment in some lint-free/microfiber cloths. These soft scratch-proof towels do a great job of lifting dust in a safe manner. Simply run the dry cloth over the surface of the cabinets to remove everyday dust, or use with your approved cleaner. Dishcloths and abrasive towels or sponges are not recommended, as they may either scratch the cabinet finish or contain hints of detergents or debris that can be harsh to them.
As you go about your daily routines, make sure to immediately dry any water or moisture that comes in contact with your cabinets with your lint-free cloth. Prolonged water exposure can leave permanent damage to the face of the cabinets as well as the shelves.
When it comes to detergents, steer clear of abrasive cleaners or self-polishing waxes, as they may remove the cabinet’s factory applied finish (for instance, “Old English,” “Pledge,” or “Endust.”
Here is what we recommend for your Brakur Custom Cabinetry, in addition to the aforementioned general maintenance tips:
Standard Finish (50 Sheen) – Clean your cabinetry with the lint-free cloth utilizing Soclean wood cleaner. Also, occasionally clean with Citrus Shine, but be sure to dry these products immediately.
Specialty Finish (5 Sheen or 20 Sheen) – For our specialty finishes, we recommend cleaning the cabinetry with Soclean wood cleaner, as we do for the standard finishes, but you should not use Citrus Shine on your Specialty Finished cabinets. Instead, you can use this homemade solution: 1 gallon of water mixed with ¼ cup vinegar. Apply with lint-free cloth, and dry immediately.
Painted cabinetry - Soclean wood cleaner and a lint-free cloth are recommended for painted cabinetry as well, but never use ammonia based cleaners, as they will soften the finish.
