What does the sink you choose for your kitchen or bathroom say about your style? Just like countertops, sinks come in a variety of materials, shapes, and colors. They add style and also affect the look and function of your kitchen. There is basically five different types of sink mounts: under mount, self-rimming, integral, vessel and farmhouse sinks. They not only add to the style, but can also enhance your kitchen and bath custom cabinetry. Learning about the different types of mounted sinks will help define your style and get the right look for your Chicagoland custom kitchen.
Types of Sink Mounts
- Under Mount Sink – Also known as a recessed sink is installed under the kitchen counter top. It gives a seamless appearance and makes things easy for clean up. You just brush those crumbs right in. If you opt for this type of sink you will want to consider the countertop material. Since the edge of the countertop is exposed to water you will want something that is waterproof such as quartz or granite. It is also a little more complicated to install this type of sink. It is not recommended for DIY projects. You will want a skilled professional who is familiar with this type of sink.
- Integral Sink – These sinks are made from the same material as the countertop. It adds style and gives the full seamless look. They tend to be more expensive due to the fact they have to be fabricated professionally.
- Self-Rimming Sink – This is most commonly known as the drop-in sink. It sits on top of the countertop. They are a little bit more noticeable and the seal needs to be checked so crumbs and dirt don’t build up around the outside edge.
- Vessel Sinks - These sinks have become quite popular in bathrooms. They have a classy contemporary look. The entire sink sits on top of the countertop. They are easy to clean and they give you more space underneath the cabinet. The downside is they typically sit up higher so if you have small children it may make it more difficult for them to reach.
- Farmhouse Sink – Also known as an apron front sink. The front of the sink basin is exposed. They are found in both contemporary and traditional kitchens. It is meant to be a focal point of the kitchen and is typically used in kitchens of people who like to cook. They don’t usually have holes for the faucet. The faucet is installed through the countertop or is attached to the wall. They are recommended for custom cabinets.
