Here at Brakur Custom Cabinetry, Inc., cabinets are clearly our bread and butter – but we wouldn’t leave you high and dry without anything to complement your beautiful cabinets. We also offer a wide variety of counter tops with installation services.
Through the years, one counter top material has proven to be desired by the majority – and while it has some competition lately from a similar counterpart (pun intended) – it is still one of the reigning champs: Granite.
What’s great about granite
Granite is pretty spectacular when you think about its age and where it came from. While some tops are created as people need them, granite, an intrusive rock, took millions of years to crystalize. Then, it had to be mined from the Earth, cut and polished before finally becoming a counter top. A true piece of geologic art and history sitting right on top of your cabinets…it’s no wonder people love it.
Pros: Granite is extremely durable and comes in a multitude of color and pattern options (no two exactly the same, since it was made by Mother Nature, herself). People enjoy its strength – which helps it stand up to normal wear and tear in the kitchen. Heat? No problem – remember, it was formed by molten lava, so your hot pan isn’t going to hurt it. Scratches? As long as you’re not hacking at them with a meat cleaver, your granite counter tops shouldn’t scratch or crack. When it is properly sealed, granite is also quite stain resistant, even with its naturally porous nature – just be careful not to seal in existing stains. Maintenance, aside from the occasional sealing, is a breeze – simply wiping them down with mild soap and water is usually sufficient enough to keep these countertops clean.
Cons: A pretty obvious negative people find with granite is that it is on the higher end of the expense spectrum, but when you think back to where it came from and what it takes to get it to your kitchen, this is understandable. Another downside to granite is that it does need to be sealed properly because of its porous nature – otherwise it will be susceptible to staining and bacteria. Depending on the design of your kitchen and the size of the granite slabs, you may also have seams in your countertop if you choose granite – these aren’t usually too noticeable unless you’re looking for them, which is a plus.
Granite can be a fabulous addition to your kitchen or bathroom and may even add resale value to your home. Although it tends to be more costly, pricing all depends on your countertop thickness, design and edge profile (whether you choose to go with a standard square edge, a beveled edge, a bullnose or another option). Don’t rule it out until you know what is available to you – with all the options, there is likely to be granite top you’ll love.
