According to a recent Houzz study, stainless steel appliances remain the most popular choice for homeowners in the U.S. Stainless steel looks great and its nonporous surface impedes the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms. Whether your kitchen is full of stainless steel surfaces or you have just a little, here is how to maintain and clean them so they keep their beautiful appeal.
- Use a microfiber cloth and avoid steel scouring pads that can scratch. While stainless steel tends to not rust if scratched water can get in under the surface and make it more vulnerable
- Wipe with the grain. Always scrub in the same direction of the metal grain lines.
- Avoid cleaning products that contain chloride. They can damage the finish.
- Use a mild soap and water. There are cleaners made specifically for stainless steel but they usually contain silicone oil that will clean but not prevent fingerprints.
- DO NOT use silver polishes that are used for cleaning jewelry. They can be corrosive and damage the surface
- They will look better with age. They will show fewer fingerprints over time.
