How does your kitchen remodel measure up?
If you’re about to embark on a kitchen remodeling project, it will help you to know how to measure your kitchen or other space to prepare for the remodel. Your designer will do final measurements, but you can move the job (or process of getting a quote) along quickly by providing initial measurements, which your designer will use to create your new space.
To adequately measure your space, follow the steps listed below for best accuracy.
What you will need
• A tape measure: preferably heavier duty, 25-feet long.
• Pencil and paper: preferably graph paper for ease of drawing.
• Help: you may need someone to hold the other end of the tape measure. If the wall is long make sure the tape is pulled tight and doesn’t dip in the middle.
1. Draw the kitchen walls
Draw the walls in your space. Note the full length of the walls, as well as the in-between measurements. For example, measure from the wall corner to the window trim and show that dimension in addition to the entire wall dimension.
2. Note appliances
Write in where appliance outlets are, and where your dishwasher or other appliances are.
3. Note electrical
Write in where electrical outlets, light switches or telephones are if any need to be considered in your design.
4. Note other items
Look around and notice air vents or any other potential obstacles if you were to change your design from what it is today. If you have a soffit at the ceiling measure it in depth and height. Note if your current cabinets touch the soffit or if there is space above them.

Along with your measurements, make a list of anything you think your designer should know. What kinds of changes would you like to make in your space? Are there any issues that the designer needs to know about the way it is today?
Plan to adjust your kitchen design
Be prepared to review the measurements and your list of items with your designer before they begin your new design. This process will also help you be closer to and more engaged in your final kitchen with your designer.
