It’s what everyone wants to know, even before they know what they’re doing in their bath remodel. How much will it cost, and will it be worth it?

Well, a lot depends on the type of bathroom remodel you want and how long you plan on staying in your home after you remodel. Are you remodeling for an updated look? Do you want better functionality? Is it to increase resale? Is it a combination of the above?

Obviously, more structural type changes (moving walls, plumbing, etc.) increase the cost of a remodel significantly, but the following is a general guide to help you pinpoint your typical level of cost for a bathroom remodel. 

Three Levels of a Bathroom Remodel

• Basic Bathroom Remodel – Typically for people who are working on a limited budget. Many times homeowners do this if they are planning on selling in the near future.  Maybe they can keep the vanity, but switch out the countertop and add new hardware.  And possibly a fresh coat of paint and some new light fixtures will give it a fresh and clean look. Anticipate spending anywhere from $3,000 - $12,000 depending on the size and layout.
• Mid to Upper Range Bathroom Remodel – For those who plan on staying in their home a while. Most remodels fall in this price range.  This includes replacing the vanity, flooring, lightning, and adding some storage.  You might switch out your tub or add tile work to the bathroom as well.  You could expect to make some layout changes within the existing space. Most of your focus would be upgrading the fixtures and cabinets of the bathroom. A mid-range to upper-range bathroom remodel will cost you somewhere between $10,000-$35,000 dollars.
• Deluxe Bathroom Remodel – This type of remodel is for those who decide they are definitely not moving and are going to go all out.  You want to create the ultimate space and are willing to totally gut the entire bathroom and even move walls if necessary. You might move where the shower and tub are placed.  You want to upgrade everything and budget is not a concern. Homeowners can spend anywhere from $30,000 to $100,000.
