Kitchen remodels are big projects that have many moving parts (literally) and you’ll hear a lot of different opinions on where you should start with your remodel. Should you begin with colors and hardware? Should you begin with your cabinets? When should you start picking your countertops? It can all get a little crazy if you don’t sit down and think it through before you begin the demo process.
One question that you truly need to ask yourself before you make any decisions on cabinets and countertops is “What type of appliances do I want in my new kitchen?”
Why Do I Need to Start With Appliances?
Appliances can be a tricky part of the remodeling puzzle if you’re not careful. When you begin your research of products and styles, first you should decide what appliances you want to have in your new space.
One reason for choosing appliances at the very beginning of the process is because of the major changes that may need to be made to your home to get proper gas and water lines to the appliances.
Appliances also come in varying widths and heights, which can affect the cabinets that you will need to purchase. If during the remodeling process you change the appliances that you want, and happen to choose something that is larger, you’re going to have a mess on your hands trying to make it fit.
So when do I pick my cabinets and countertops?
Once you have made a decision on your appliances, it’s time to pick out the cabinets. Work with your designer to incorporate the storage and space you want for your kitchen to make sure the design will fit your lifestyle. Once you’ve settled on a layout that gives you everything you want (including the appliances you chose) you can select countertops.
Countertops become the last choice in the design because the price you pay for the material is dependent on the amount you need. If you choose your countertop before you settle on a layout, you might find yourself with too much, or too little, material.
All of the pieces of the kitchen remodel puzzle come together well when you make decisions early on in the game. Your designer can work with you on exactly when those choices need to be made, helping you stay on top of your project. If you’re looking to begin the design process, go ahead and start window shopping for appliances so you’re aware of what’s out there.
