We talk a lot about updating your kitchen and bathrooms, but there are other rooms within the home that could benefit greatly from some remodeling love. One room in particular gets visited on a regular basis, and usually the person visiting the room isn’t happy to be doing so. And why, should they be? The room is a place where chores are done; and quite frankly, it is usually boring to look at.
If you haven’t guessed, we’re talking about the laundry room. We’d venture to guess that many of you currently reading this article have a room with some or all of the following characteristics:
- White or off-white walls
- Linoleum flooring
- Outdated washer and dryer
- Lack of counter space
- A single white wire shelf hosting detergents, softeners, etc.
- A collection of shoes, a pile of clothes, pet food or kitty litter on the floor
- An ironing board leaning against the wall
Are we right?
No wonder you don’t look forward to doing laundry…and no wonder you’re the only person who sets foot in that room. It’s depressing!
There are many things that can be done to make your laundry room more useful and enjoyable if you have the space – and even the smallest changes in color and design can make a powerful change. Here are some considerations:
Add custom cabinetry – You had to have guessed this would be high on our list of priorities for the room. But, that’s because it truly makes a world of difference. Custom cabinetry will give you a place to hide away everything from roll-out laundry bins, your ironing board, detergents, pet food, and anything else you can think of. With so many custom options to choose from, there’s something for every laundry room and every budget.
Install countertops – No longer will you have to drag your clean laundry to another room for folding. As soon as it comes out of the dryer, you can fold it on your laundry countertop.
Include a sink – A deep sink can be a great addition to the space, allowing you to do everything from hand washing clothing to filling buckets.
Integrate shelving – Add some open shelving along with your custom cabinets for added storage or decorations. Fill the shelves with inspirational quotes, photos, or anything else that makes the task at hand more enjoyable.
Pay attention to lighting – How are you supposed to spot treat for stains if your lighting is dull? Instead of relying on that outdated, weak ceiling fixture, jazz up the space with task lighting and make your job easier.
Adorn the walls – Make your space beautiful by painting or stenciling the walls and adding artwork. Just because you don’t lounge in there, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t like what you see when you go in.
Think outside the box – If you dread the tasks of washing and folding like many of us, think about adding things that will make the time more enjoyable – like a small television or speakers for your music. The possibilities are endless.
