Brakur-_Popular_Bathroom_TrendsThe bathroom is heart of a lot of activity in the home. Next to the kitchen it is probably one of the most used rooms in the house that affects the function of your family.  You would be surprised at all the innovative things that can be included in your bathroom remodel. Don’t be surprised when you see how high tech bathrooms have become. There are refrigerated cabinets to store medicines, as well as other kinds of smart cabinets.

While not every trend may be for your family, we thought we would let you know what is out there in case you do decided to splurge a little and make the function and atmosphere a lot more pleasant.

Trends to Think About

Open Vanities – The trend of open storage started with kitchens and has moved to the bathrooms. It looks great and makes the bathroom appear larger. It also adds style and makes items such as towels more accessible. If it is a smaller bathroom and you are lacking counter space it gives you a place to store tissues and other common items that might typically be stored on top.

Smart Cabinets – Smart cabinets is a new and upcoming thing.  Remember the old medicine cabinet? Now you can have part of that cabinet refrigerated to store those medicines that need refrigeration. The other part of the cabinet can be used for the rest of your hygiene products. Another type of smart cabinet comes with installed electrical outlets inside.

Water Saving Fixtures – As a society we are becoming more and more aware of what we are doing to our environment and how much potential waste of natural resources there is. According the United States Environmental Protection Agency the average American family of four uses about 400 gallons of water per day.  By using water saving fixtures such as toilets and faucets you can reduce your water usage up to 20-60 percent.

Automatic Faucets – Going along with saving water, automatic faucets are great.  Younger kids can go to the bathroom and not need your help to reach the faucet.  It also prevents sinks from overflowing and flooding when someone gets distracted and forgets to turn off the faucet.

Hidden Fixtures and Cabinets - From the toilet to a built-in medicine cabinet with a picture frame as the door, there are a lot of options when it comes to hiding things in the bathroom. More and more we no longer want to see stuff piled in baskets sitting on our bathroom counters.  There are many space saving storage ideas that you can incorporate into your bathroom.

Seamless Showers – More and more people are looking for a seamless look.  The flooring runs right into the shower.  They have what are called smart drains so don’t worry about flooding the bathroom.

Free Standing Tubs – Remember the old fashioned tubs we used to see in the movies. Well they are making a comeback.  Only today they come in a variety of sizes and many come with a lot more features.  You don’t have to give up that jetted tub.

Built in shower seats – In a recent article we discussed designing a kitchen that will age with you.  The same goes for the bathroom. We aren’t always thinking about the future and how a remodel will affect us as we age. If you are going to replace the shower it is a good idea to install handles and a built-in shower seat.

Decorating with Nature and Monochromatic Colors – Using nature in the décor of our bathrooms has become a hot trend. Monochromatic tones are in, and in more contemporary homes bathrooms tend to bring the outside in with their décor.

For some of us some of these trends may be just that, a trend. But others are something we should think about. If it is something that can help you save money in the long run and help your family to function better, then it is worth it.
