When you get sick, do you walk into your doctor’s office and tell him or her what to prescribe to heal you? On the contrary, you explain what you’re feeling to your doctor and they prescribe the best answer to make you well.
In the Kitchen and Bath Industry, the way we go about getting a kitchen remodel should be the same. Unfortunately, we’ve trained consumers to prescribe their own solutions based on what they’re told or what they see in magazines.
There’s a better way to ensure you achieve the kitchen of your dreams.
The Magic Word when doing a Kitchen – “Why”
Just like the first thing we tell the doctor is WHY we’re in their office, we should have the same method to explain to our kitchen designer when WHY we’re doing a kitchen. We describe the problem we’re trying to solve, and why we need to solve it. Then, the designer uses his or her expertise to provide the best solution to our problem.
So many homeowners find something in a magazine or neighbor’s house that they think will solve their problem, and that’s what they take to their designer. There may be a much better solution if the professional designer understands the reason they’re doing the kitchen in the first place, and what problems they’re trying to solve.
If consumers go in to their designers with this in mind, they will arrive at a much better kitchen with less error and get it faster. In doing a new kitchen, you only get one try, so this concept is extremely important.
One Example: Trash Bin in the Island Cabinet
When doing their kitchen planning, what if a homeowner says to their kitchen designer, “I really need a trash bin in my island cabinet”? The designer may say, “Ok, no problem” and include a trash bin cabinet in the design.
If instead, the homeowner explains WHY they need a solution around trash, the designer may have a MUCH better solution for the problem. What if the homeowner says “I have five kids and we have a major trash problem. I need a way to solve the mounds of garbage that consume my kitchen.”
Now the designer can prescribe the best possible answer to the problem, because he or she knows the problem. In this case, the best answer may not be a trash bin in the island. It might be something totally different.
This is how homeowners can more effectively get the kitchen of their dreams. When you meet with your kitchen designer, don’t tell them WHAT you need, but WHY you need it. That will give your designer what they need to create the RIGHT prescription.
At Brakur Custom Cabinetry, we translate your needs into the best prescription to give you the kitchen that will make you completely happy with the result.
