Many times, people spend so much focus and effort on their kitchen or bath remodel, they neglect to think through what would be best in their laundry room and make that part of their improvement project. The laundry room is frequently the “afterthought”, even though we use them almost every day.
The size, shape and layout of laundry rooms can vary drastically. To get the most out of your laundry room, consider these basic questions so it doesn’t get left out of the improvement project in your home.
How do you Want Your Laundry Room to Function?People use their laundry rooms for all kinds of purposes. In addition to clothes, they may have multi-use storage, tool drawers, battery storage, flashlights, pet food, light bulbs, outdoor equipment, shoes, vacuum cleaner, brooms, mops, cleaning supplies, calendars, keys, and on…and on.
Make a list of all the functions you want your laundry room to be used for or what it will contain.
How do you do Your Laundry?More than most people understand, the way they wash, dry and fold clothes dictates how their space should function and be designed. Quantity of laundry is a major input into that design as well (how many people, how often is laundry done, etc.). Even hamper placement is best defined by the answers to these questions.
Do you hang clothing in the laundry room (or do you want to)? Strategically placed racks may be in order. Do you fold in the laundry room? You may need a seating area and/or tabletop to make it perfect.
Laundry Room EnvironmentOnce you know what functions will be happening in the laundry room and how often, that will help you define how to support those functions. What’s the best flooring for those things? What kind of lighting would best support those activities? What color scheme would best provide for the mood and feel you want in that room while doing those things?
These and other questions about your best laundry design are elaborated upon in this workbook.
