Many homeowners wonder how important is it that the interior style and kitchen match the exterior style of the home.  While there is no easy answer to this question there are some things you will want to consider.  

Some realtors will say yes your interior definitely should reflect your exterior home style.  While others may not think it matters as much. The biggest thing is making sure there is some continuity and that you use styles that are not too drastically different from one another.

Do you ever plan on selling your home?  Chances are it is the exterior or curb appeal that gives that initial interest. If you have an old Victorian home people are not expecting to see a modern contemporary streamlined kitchen.  They would anticipate seeing a more traditional kitchen with lots of crown molding and corbels.  Having two drastic styles that compete with one another could affect the resale of your home.

Is the exterior style of your home identical to the rest of the homes in the neighborhood? Sometimes you are restricted by the style and neighborhood in which you live.  If you are in a home where most of the houses in the neighborhood all look the same, you can customize interior style. This might be where you would not want the interior to match the exterior style. You want to make your house stand out from the rest.  No better way to make your home stand out than a custom kitchen with a contemporary look. 

What are the popular kitchen design trends for your neighborhood?  A recent study compared the different style and trends between rural, suburban and urban areas.  While a contemporary kitchen style was most popular among the urban neighborhoods, they found traditional and transitional kitchens did well everywhere else.  So if you aren’t sure you can always go with a transitional kitchen and pull in some different design elements to tie your kitchen in with the exterior of your home.

Overall, while style does play an important role in your kitchen, it is the overall design and function of the kitchen that will have the biggest impact.  If you know you are never going to sell your home, then go with any kitchen style you want and get what you want.  If you think a move may be in your future than you may want to make sure the kitchen style is representative of the exterior style of the home.
