A lot of people, when planning their kitchen, wonder whether they would be happier with a walk-in pantry or pantry cabinets. Sometimes your layout makes the determination for you, but if you have a choice to go either way, which one is best? We cover the pros and cons of each here.
Walk-In Pantry
Pros
Space Galore! – Walk-in pantries clearly win for sheer space and room to put things. They make it easy to store tons of stuff as well as keep everything exquisitely organized and easy to get to.
Taller Than Cabinets – Walk-ins usually go from the floor all the way to the ceiling. When this is the case, you may have tall shelves, short shelves, cubbies, cabinets, or whatever you want with all that space.
Better Organization – More space makes it easier to be creative in how you can organize all of your stuff.
Cons
Space Constraints – Walk-in pantries require a lot of space compared to a cabinet pantry. Many kitchens just don’t have that much area.
More Upkeep – Large spaces sometimes turn into a dumping ground because even if you throw stuff in there, you STILL have room. This can detract from your dreams of organization.
Cabinet Pantry
Pros
Smaller Footprint – If kitchen real estate is an issue, a cabinet or cabinets to play the role of “pantry” can work well. There are many pantry cabinets with lots of storage options. Many people don’t recognize how much can fit in a pantry cabinet with accessories to organize things.
Centralized Storage – Since in cabinet pantries your stuff is confined to a smaller space, it may be much faster and easier to find.
Closer to You – Your cabinet pantry is in your kitchen where you are. A walk-in pantry is usually farther away from your workspace.
Cons
They Take Space – Similar to walk-in pantries, cabinet pantries can be large and can take up lots of space in the kitchen. They’re typically deep and wide so that you can have room to store more things.
Less Countertop Space – Cabinet pantries take space that would otherwise be countertop space. So countertop surface is limited when you put pantry cabinets in. There are options, however, to utilize base pantry cabinets if countertop space is a concern.
