Many homeowners assume because they have a small kitchen they have to forgo a kitchen island. Many worry that it will take up valuable floor space or make the kitchen feel too cramped. However, when you compare the benefits of a slim and compact kitchen island, it may be worth giving up a little of your valuable floor space.
Kitchen islands can add extra storage and increase your countertop space. They can also give you an extra work zone in the kitchen. We suggest the following design tips when deciding if you have room for a kitchen island in your compact and small kitchen.
Kitchen Design Tips
- Your island should be no less than 40 by 40 inches. However if you are including an elongated island as opposed to a square than it should be no more than 24 inches wide.
- Make sure there is at least 3 feet clearance between the island and opposing cabinet and appliances.
- Consider a rolling island that can be wheeled in and stored in an adjacent room such as a laundry room. You just wheel it in when you need the items stored and the extra workspace to work.
- Include an island with open shelving so items are accessible and within reach.
- Make sure your island doesn’t block the entry and exit to the kitchen
