The kitchen is one of the hardest working rooms in the home.  It also takes a lot of abuse.  If you have been living in your home a while you may be feeling like you want to update your kitchen.  However either due to budget or the fact that your cabinets are still in really good condition you are having a hard time justifying a full kitchen remodel. There are some less expensive things you can do to help you feel like you have a new kitchen that won’t break the bank.    

• Add or change your island - With the introduction of two-tone cabinets adding a new kitchen island that is a different color or finish can change the whole look of the kitchen.  Plus you can add some organizational inserts they may not have been available when your kitchen was originally done. You can get an island that has both style and function.

• Add glass inserts to change cabinet doors - Getting a glass insert or changing out the doors of your cabinets can really spice up your kitchen. 

• Change your light fixtures - Light fixtures and styles seem to go out almost as soon as they come in.  Add some track and pendant lighting.  It will brighten up your kitchen.

• Get a new countertop – Now is the time to get that countertop you always wanted.  There are so many more countertop options than there used to be.  You might consider a wood countertop for the island or going with more than one countertop in the kitchen.

• Get a new backsplash - There are so many new bold and creative backsplashes that are now available.

• Change Hardware - The hardware you put on your cabinets can change the whole style and look of the kitchen.  You can go more ornate for a traditional kitchen and might opt for knobs and pulls if you like the transitional kitchen style.

• Add some crown molding or base furniture molding - While crown molding can get expensive, if you don’t have it, just adding it will make a big difference. If you change they type of crown molding you have it can also change the look and style of your kitchen. There are a variety of options when it comes to kitchen cabinet molding. One thing to consider though is it may be hard to match the color of your cabinets unless they are painted.

• Add under cabinet lighting - This has become quite popular and really adds to the look and feel of the kitchen.

• Remove the doors on upper cabinets – Many homeowners want open shelves. By removing a few doors you automatically open up the kitchen. One thing to consider though is it will take a skilled laborer to patch the holes where the door originally was and you need to consider the shape of the interior of the cabinets. 

• Touch up nicks and dings with a touch up kit from manufacturer
